If your roof was built before 2007 there is a very chance it is nailed on. A good way for you to check is stand at the bottom of your roof, cast your eyes along the ridge line, and see if you can notice any nails raised.

Over time with movement expansion and contraction, the nails slowly work their way up. Often there is a foam washer under the head of the nail which is not a good seal. Hitting them down again does not solve the problem – the reason for this is because it just drives the nails back down the same hole. The correct way is to remove all nails and replace with roofing screws for adequate grip, once these screws are in they are in!
